Simon Taylor in Human

The Garden of Unearthly Delights, The Spare Room until March 12

Review by Honey B

Simon Taylor’s charming and effortless style of comedy has the human touch. A well-performed card trick eased the audience into Taylor’s easygoing routine and a bit of light banter set-up the night. The sharp-witted Melbournian has a penchant for observational comedy and a love of languages which he demonstrated throughout the show. Taylor’s intelligent comedy routine looked at the economy of the use of vowels in Aussie slang to the delight of the sold-out crowd and he also touched on the Chinese and French languages. The consummate performer weaved a lovely story about his old Mitsubishi car throughout the night as it took him to “A and sometimes B’’. He likened the classic car to an old man trying to get moving and the windscreen wiper line was a scream. Relating a country road trip, the breakdown of the Mitsi and his encounters with the country folk of Swan Hill made for an entertaining story with a nice little moral to round it all out. A stand-out of the show was Taylor’s well-practiced hipster dance moves and his Disney song about being a Beta male, sung to the Little Mermaid’s Part of Your World tune. Human is Taylor-made for a feel-good, intelligent and fun night out.
