Rhonda Burchmore & Trevor Ashley in Twins

Adelaide Cabaret Festival, Friday, June 10-12

Review by Honey B

Cabaret legends Rhonda Burchmore and Trevor Ashley make a delightfully oddball pairing in this witty, over-the- top, satirical cabaret. The two are pretty much twins – you can see it. Okay so they are more twins in spirit with the leggy red-head and her buxom bestie both loving sequins, gossip and cabaret. Sparkling in blue and pink matching dresses the gorgeous duo start out with a well-known Michael Jackson tune, Man In The Mirror and flip it to I’m Singing With My Twin In The Mirror. None of the songs that they sing are left unaltered with all being twisted in deliciously devilish ways. There are many highlights in this decadent show including Burchmore’s parody of Adelaide’s own Sia Furler’s Chandelier – which is complete with wig and massive bow. Ashley also ups the ante with his spot on Adele imitation complete with flapping arms and flicking of the hair to her smash hit Hello – but imagine singing “I like my chicken crumbed and fried and I’m sorry I’ve broken your chair.’’. The cabaret stalwarts have created some video interludes as they whip off-stage for costume changes. Burchmore nails the role of an ET host and she is a dead-ringer for Kris Jenner, matriarch of the Kardashians. Some of the lyrics and banter are rude and crude, but who cares it made for a hilarious, fun night out.
