Ms Lisa Fischer & Grand Baton

Adelaide Cabaret Festival, Dunstan Playhouse

Review by Honey B

Ms Lisa Fischer took the audience on a lyrical journey of highs and lows and everything in-between. The glorious singer told the sold-out crowd they would get “lost in the melodies, the harmonies and the stories. She was not wrong. Thus began a jaw- dropping, inspiring evening as Fischer and her tight trio of musicians including musical director J.C. Maillard, bass player Aidan Carroll and drummer Thierry Arpin. Even though Fischer was battling a “gremlin’’ she didn’t let a few sniffles slow her down at all as the barefoot diva floated and danced around the stage in a mesmerising rhythm. The evening built in glorious style from the gospel glory of Breath of Heaven to the sultry Don’t Ever Let Nobody Drag Your Spirit Down climaxing in the syncopated Rock and Roll by Led Zeppelin. While an amazing artist in her own right, Fischer has also established herself as a long-time backing vocalist for the Rolling Stones. Throughout the night she sang several Stones songs in her own style including Wild Horses, Jumpin’ Jack Flash and Gimme Shelter. She also re-invented Robert Palmer’s Addicted to Love to the pure delight of the audience. At a Lisa Fischer show you know you are in the presence of greatness – to have another hour with her would have been wonderful.
