Lawrence Mooney in Surely Not

Adelaide Fringe, Rhino Room, Frome St, until March 15

Review by Honey B

Lawrence Mooney was at ease with the audience and in revealing his more personal than angry show at the Adelaide Fringe this year. Usually Mooney likes a bit of rant and rave about recent topical issues, but that had to be cut short due to a death in the family. Mooney has crafted a well- rounded, thoughtful, retrospective show about growing up with his two older brothers and the journey the three go on when a beloved uncle dies. The show was a masterclass in comedic storytelling, however it didn't really need the "surely nots'' as funny as they were - especially the Tony Abbott digs. The quick-fire comedian had a wickedly sharp wit that he used to the utmost. Mooney also engaged in easy conversation with audience members and he finished with the perfect tribute to his bachelor uncle.
