Gold

Review by Honey B

Director: Stephen Gaghan Cast: Matthew McConaughey, Edgar Ramirez, Bryce Dallas Howard, Macon Blair, Craig T. Nelson, Adam LeFevre Plot: Struggling miner Kenny Wells (Matthew McConaughey) makes his fortune thanks to a gold find he makes with the help of the “famed’’ Michael Acosta (Edgar Ramirez). But their potentially lucrative mineral find in Indonesia comes with plenty of pitfalls in the form of the Suharto regime and mining competitors in the US. Verdict: This real-life drama hasn’t struck gold. Based on the events of 1990s Bre-X Minerals disaster, the film follows the rise of struggling American prospector Kenny Wells (McConaughey) and his inevitable fall from grace. Kenny is a third generation prospector who is just holding off the foreclosure of his family business and he takes one more roll of the dice with geologist and eventual mining partner Michael Acosta (Edgar Ramirez). This movie is all about McConaughey’s performance, which is certainly riveting and he is committed to the project to the point of shaving some of his hair off to show off a very unattractive comb-over and gaining about 45kg. Unfortunately Ramirez doesn’t get much screen time and his character deserves more, while Bryce Dallas Howard as McConaughey’s bubbly and loyal girlfriend showed a lot of strength. Unfortunately director Stephen Gaghan hasn’t managed to mine the depths of this drama with it coming off more Dynasty-like than Wolf of Wall Street. (Movies are rated out of 5 stars)
