Wild

Review by Honey B

Director: Jean-Marc Vallée Cast: Reese Witherspoon, Laura Dern, Thomas Sadoski Plot: With the dissolution of her marriage and the death of her mother, Cheryl Strayed has lost all hope. After years of reckless, destructive behaviour, she makes a rash decision. With absolutely no experience, driven only by sheer determination, Cheryl hikes more than a thousand miles of the Pacific Crest Trail, alone. Wild powerfully captures the terrors and pleasures of one young woman forging ahead against all odds on a journey that maddens, strengthens, and ultimately heals her. Verdict: The weight of this inspiring, real life drama is entirely on the capable shoulders of the gutsy Reese Witherspoon. Witherspoon plays Cheryl Strayed who is an intelligent girl who has run her life off of the rails due to a family tragedy. As Strayed walks the gruelling Pacific Crest Trail alone through heat, rain and snow she aims to get back to her “best self’’. Witherspoon instils the lost young woman with a fierce inner-strength as she struggles to break free of her recent addictions and let go of her grief to live again. Through flashbacks we see the past events of Cheryl’s life, which wasn’t easy, but it was full of love and fun thanks to her mother (Laura Dern), until circumstances change and Cheryl spirals into a destructive spiral. As the newbie hiker “puts herself in the way of beauty’’ Witherspoon slowly opens the character’s heart and the emotions pour out over the vast wilderness. This is a beautiful, spiritual movie of many highs and lows with a picturesque landscape to match the ebb and flow of emotions.
