The Secret Life of Walter Mitty

Review by Honey B

Director: Ben Stiller Cast: Ben Stiller, Kristen Wiig, Shirley MacLaine, Sean Penn Synopsis: Ben Stiller directs and stars in The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, James Thurber's classic story of a day-dreamer who escapes his anonymous life by disappearing into a world of fantasies filled with heroism, romance and action. When his job along with that of his co-worker (Kristen Wiig) are threatened, Walter takes action in the real world embarking on a global journey that turns into an adventure more extraordinary than anything he could have ever imagined. Verdict: This film has its ups and downs much as Walter Mitty (Ben Stiller) himself does. Mitty is a mild-mannered mouse of a man who retreats into his daydreams where he can do anything. He can save three-legged dogs, he can be smart and funny and he can romance the girl he likes. At times this flick loses its edge and slips into Mitty's dull life, but with Stiller in the lead role he has the charm and quirkiness to overcome many of the lacklustre moments of the film. It's in the dream sequences where this film soars and also the romance between Mitty and Cheryl Melhoff (Kristen Wiig) is a sweet surprise. The casting in this film is superb and along with Wiig, Sean Penn is a wonderful addition to the cast as the adventurous and hard to find Life photographer while Ólafur Ólafsson as a drunk helicopter pilot is fantastic and Patton Oswalt as an E Harmony consultant is hilarious. While this film is a bit episodic it certainly has a subtle edge, there's some fantastic scenery and action sequences and its wonderful, hard- working cast carry this film over the line.
