Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit

Review by Honey B

Director: Kenneth Branagh Cast: Chris Pine, Kevin Costner, Keira Knightley, Kenneth Branagh Synopsis: Based on the character created by bestselling author Tom Clancy, Jack Ryan is a global action thriller set in the present day. This original story follows a young Jack (Chris Pine) as he uncovers a financial terrorist plot. The story follows him from 9/11, through his tour of duty in Afghanistan, which scarred him forever, and into his early days in the Financial Intelligence Unit of the modern CIA where he becomes an analyst, under the guardianship of his handler, Harper (Kevin Costner). When Ryan believes he's uncovered a Russian plot to collapse the United States economy, he goes from being an analyst to becoming a spy and must fight to save his own life and those of countless others, while also trying to protect the thing that's more important to him than anything, his relationship with his fiancée Cathy (Keira Knightley). Verdict: Chris Pine is not the first Jack Ryan to grace the big screen - with Tom Clancy's spy having appeared in four blockbusters. The much-loved character has previously been played by big names Harrison Ford, Michael Douglas and Ben Affleck and now it's Pine's turn to put his own spin on the role. This latest instalment is a bit different from the others and it's actually the first film not adapted from a Clancy novel. Shadow Recruit is also placed before the other films at the start of Jack Ryan's career in the CIA. The fresh-faced Pine slips into the role of a new spy with ease and Kenneth Branagh as the evil Russian who hates America and is trying to bring the country to its knees, financially, is super smooth and chilling. All up it's a pretty kick-arse ensemble cast and a frenetic ride. Let's see more of the young spy Jack Ryan!
