Johanna’s ode to composer Harold Arlen

By Honey B

Adelaide's own powerful songstress Johanna Allen is shining the spotlight on the creative genius of Harold Arlen at this year's Adelaide Cabaret Festival. Allen loves the songs of Arlen and she's sure that many other people feel the same way too -they just don't know his name. So, she's about to change that. "Harold Arlen wrote more than 500 popular songs which were sung by the most famous women of the time (1930s - 1950s) including Lena Horne, Peggy Lee, Ethel Waters and Judy Garland. "All of these women have their own stories of tragedy and survival which just adds to the show.'' Allen explores the music of Arlen and the women who sang his songs in a powerful performance.
